Our Story:
Our family has lived at the farm since 1978 and been a part of Big Rapids for over 7 generations. When we purchased the farm we were raising harness horses and only growing hay and pasture for the horses and vegetables in a small garden for the family. Approximately two of our 80 acres are in vegetable, fruit, herb, and flower production. An additional 50 acres are being developed and dedicated to permaculture and pasture.
In 2007 we decided we wanted to get the farm back to a working farm. Equipment was purchased and land worked up to expand the existing family garden. In 2009 we started producing vegetables for our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members and developed a web-site for our members to connect with us at. Over the next 5 years we added more land for production and grew our CSA membership. In 2017 we expanded again with two new 30' x 72' hoop houses to extend our growing seasons and become a year round vegetable farm. 2020 saw us add an employee, build a Farm Shed for our farm partners goods, and plant an Elderberry orchard. For 2024, we have another exciting year on tap, continuing with our herb grower, adding some value added products, and making our beautiful clay soil even healthier!
We are Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) and are one of the first farms in our area and the only farm in Mecosta County to achieve that certification. This certification is great because it lets you know that we do not use any chemicals on our plants or in our soil, that building a healthy soil is a top priority, and that we grow all the vegetables our members receive each week. This is very exciting for the area and hopefully more local farms will get this certification.
The past 16 years have been a great learning experience that has given our family a better appreciation and understanding of our food, health, and the environment. We hope our farm can do the same for you and your family.
Please contact us at 517-745-5913 or email at [email protected] if you have questions, we would love to hear from you. Or better yet, stop out to the farm for a visit and see how your vegetables are grown!
